Welcome to the home page of the Queensland Branch of the

Royal Scottish Country Dance Society

Welcome to Australia's Sunshine State. Queensland spans the Tropic of Capricorn, on the east of the continent. Visitors can enjoy a journey of dance from the beaches of the Gold Coast to the tropical rainforests of the Far North. There is always something happening across the state, which you will find detailed in our Events section.

A brief history of the RSCDS in Queensland

Many of the clubs in the State existed before the branch itself was formed. The first united efforts by those in Brisbane, Milton, Clan Mackenzie, and Bardon, were visits to each other's clubs in 1971, followed by combined weekend schools in 1972, 1973 and 1974 at the initial instigation of Phyllis and Jim South, who were both recipients of the Society's Scroll of Honour in our 25th Anniversary year, 2002. These weekends served to emphasise the need for the training and certification of local teachers to RSCDS standards, and led to the formation in 1975 of the Combined Affiliated Scottish Country Dance Clubs. The S.E.Queensland Branch came into being in 1977, and, with all the ensuing benefits from RSCDS Headquarters, established a solid basis for staging, in 1980, the 5th Australian Winter School, held in Toowoomba. Subsequently, the 12th Winter School was held at Mount Gravatt in 1987, and the 19th Winter School in 1994, also at Mount Gravatt. In 1998 the S.E.Queensland Branch was re-formed as The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Queensland Branch Incorporated. At present we run four classes, and a number of clubs both in Brisbane and around the State have become associated with the branch, (details below).

(Our thanks for this information to Bernard Knowles, who has been a Scottish Country dancer for over sixty years and who has written a complete history of the South-East Queensland Branch.) In 2001 the Branch successfully hosted the 26th Australian Winter School at the University of Queensland. The logo on the left, above, was designed for that Winter School by its convenor, Cathy McLeod, and represents 'Celtic Queensland'. We liked it so much that Cathy donated the design to us.

Queensland has again hosted a Winter School in July 2008. This was at held at Tallebudgera and was a wonderful week of music and dance.

What do I wear?
For classes, something cool. Remember it can be pretty warm in Queensland, even in winter. Shorts for men (no long trousers, please!) and a blouse and skirt, or dress, for women to allow plenty of movement. Both sexes should wear soft dancing shoes.
For Socials, men are encouraged to wear the kilt.

A useful source of supply for dancing shoes, kilts and all Highland wear is:
  Highland House
102 Cairns Terrace
Red Hill
Brisbane , 4059
ph.07 3369-4014
, or e-mail mail@highlandhouse.com.au.

How much does it cost?
Each member of the Queensland Branch must automatically be a member of the parent Society. The total fee amounts to $50 for one person or $90 for a couple. In addition, some clubs charge a small annual membership fee, and all clubs charge around $4 - $6 per class, including supper. However you look at it, it's a very cheap way of enjoying a really healthy form of recreation and making new friends!
