 Queensland Branch
Royal Scottish Country Dance Society

Welcome to the Queensland Branch of the
Royal Scottish Country Dance Society

Welcome to Australia's Sunshine State. Queensland spans the Tropic of Capricorn, on the east of the continent. Visitors can enjoy a journey of dance from the beaches of the Gold Coast to the tropical rainforests of the Far North. There is always something happening across the state, which you will find detailed in our Events section.

Dear fellow dancers,
Fortunately, Queensland has been able to avoid many of the Corona Virus problems the rest of the world has to deal with. With a Covid-safe plan in hand, many Queensland Scottish Country Dance Clubs have been able to restart dancing in September 2020. To find out where you can dance, please, check with club reps or teachers (see below in Qld Club Class section). If the Covid-19 conditions in Qld change, we will have to vary our dance classes according to official health directives. Let's all keep safe and well. Happy dancing!

ARE YOU MISSING THE 3Fs IN YOUR LIFE:  FRIENDS, FUN & FITNESS ?
Dancing is one of the best forms of gaining the 3Fs in your life?   Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) or Ceilidh dancing, as it is sometimes known, combines all three in addition to improving memory.  Much of the music is traditional, as are many of the dances.  Like most forms of country dancing, it is performed in teams, the routines combining forwards and sideways movements with side-skipping, turning and hopping elements – all of which assist in combating the deterioration of the nervous system (memory loss).  This form of dancing encourages upright posture keeping muscles strong and responsive and needs no special equipment.  All it needs is a willingness to learn, laugh at yourself, and smile at your fellow dancers.

Advantages are that it is an inexpensive way of improving fitness, needs no regular partner, is fun and has no age limits.  Of course, like any form of exercise, it takes discipline to work as a team.  This is part of the challenge:  moving to music (listening), coordinating movements and combining sequences (memory) and work together in the performance of a dance.

Where to Dance

There are many clubs in Queensland who conduct weekly classes and would welcome new members. For details of classes and contacts, please, check the class information tab on the Queensland home page.
Social dance nights will be held throughout the year at different locations, sometimes with life music to dance to. To get a feel for the joy and enthusiasm of Scottish Country Dancers all over the world check out the video clips posted on YouTube.

What to wear

For classes, something cool. Remember it can be pretty warm in Queensland, even in winter. Usually shorts for men and a blouse and skirt, or dress, for women to allow plenty of movement. Both sexes should wear soft dancing shoes.
For Socials, men are encouraged to wear the kilt.

How much does it cost?

Some clubs charge a small annual membership fee, and all clubs charge around $5 - $8 per class, sometimes including supper. However you look at it, it's a very cheap way of enjoying a really healthy form of recreation and making new friends!
You can also join the RSCDS Queensland Branch Inc which gives you automatically membership of the RSCDS parent Society in Scotland and entitles you to extra benefits.

Corona chronicles

Hello  RSCDS Qld Branch members, and other  dancers  (and non-dancers) from Qld and elsewhere,
Our committee members Cathy, Fran and Lyn have combined their talents to bring you the “Corona Chronicles”, as a contribution to cheer you up and keep you connected to dancers near and far.
Stay safe and healthy, and physically (socially) distanced!
