History of the Blue Mountains Club
Setting up a Scottish country dancing club in the upper Blue Mountains was the brainchild of Verley Kelliher (see Verley Kelliher Memories.pdf) and Tessa Knight. In October 2000, Verley received a collection of tapes to start the Blackheath Dancing Celts and the small band of 8 dancers marched in the 2001 Rhododendron Festival to promote the club. The Blue Mountains Club was incorporated as the Blue Mountains Scottish Country Dancers Inc on 31 July 2002 and has continued to maintain its incorporated status ever since. Verley Kelliher held the position of President until October 2004. Past Presidents have included Pat Whitehead, John Powell and June Pretyman.
After almost 25 years of incorporation, the Blue Mountains Scottish Country Dancers finally launched our own logo in early 2025. The logo design features the iconic landmark of the Three Sisters in Katoomba and a pair of Celtic dancing shoes. Local artist, Anne Bowman, a regular dancer with the Blue Mountains Club, designed and prepared the logo with input from committee members. Teachers
In the first two years, Verley taught classes while, in 2002 and 2003, Brian and Pat Charlton from Sydney Branch were invited to teach a number of workshops. Bob Reyswood replaced Verley in July 2002 while she attended Winter School and again for seven weeks in 2003 when she was on holidays in the UK. On Verley’s return, she and Bob shared the teaching of the classes. Verley stopped teaching in 2004 and Bob Reyswood became the permanent teacher for the Blue Mountains until 2019. Upon Bob leaving the mountains and during Covid, teaching was shared by a number of long-time dancers, including Adele Beardsmore and Peter Warth. In 2021, Emily Prichard joined the Club and has been the permanent teacher since then. A timeline of the early years to 2006 of the club is available (BMSCD timeline.pdf).
